Andrew Carnegie

9 questions · Economics

Andrew Carnegie, born in poor Scotland in 1835, emigrated to the USA as a child with his family and became the „steel king“. With his steel company he supplied rapidly growing America with the material for railways, bridges and skyscrapers. In 1901 he sold his company for a then-unimaginable sum. Afterwards he devoted the rest of his life to giving away his fortune: he funded thousands of libraries worldwide and coined the phrase: „The man who dies rich dies disgraced.“ Good to know: He is called the „steel king“. Steel was the building material of the industrial age. The family came to the USA in great poverty. His rise is a classic rags-to-riches story. The buyer was the banker J. P. Morgan. From it came the giant U.S. Steel. He built over 2,500 libraries in many countries. Education for all was close to his heart. He believed the rich should give their money away wisely in life. He acted on this himself consistently. Besides libraries he funded education, peace and research. He became a model for modern billionaire philanthropy.
