Anne Frank is born in Frankfurt am Main in 1929 into a Jewish family. When the Nazis come to power in Germany, the family flees to the Netherlands and begins a new life in Amsterdam. But in 1940 Nazi Germany occupies the Netherlands too, and the persecution of the Jewish population catches up with the Franks. For her 13th birthday in 1942, Anne is given a diary. A few weeks later the family has to go into hiding: in a concealed annex above her father's business, the Frank family hides together with other persecuted people, bravely supported by a few helpers. For more than two years Anne lives in the most cramped conditions, never allowed outside. During this time she confides her thoughts, fears and hopes to her diary, which she calls "Kitty", with intelligence, humour and remarkable maturity. In 1944 the hiding place is betrayed, and everyone in hiding is arrested and deported to concentration camps. Anne dies of illness in early 1945 in the Bergen-Belsen camp: only weeks before its liberation. She was just 15. Of those in hiding, only her father Otto survives. He finds Anne's abandoned writings and has them published. 'The Diary of Anne Frank' is translated into more than 70 languages and read around the world. The words of one girl become one of the most powerful voices against hatred and persecution and a memorial reminding millions of people where exclusion can lead.
