Apollo is the Greek god of light, music, poetry, prophecy and healing and at the same time a feared archer. As the radiant leader of the Muses he embodies measure, beauty and harmony, and is one of the most versatile of the Olympian gods. He is the twin brother of Artemis, children of Zeus and the Titaness Leto. His most famous sanctuary was the oracle of Delphi, where the priestess Pythia proclaimed enigmatic prophecies in his name. Apollo unites apparent opposites: healing and deadly arrows, music and prophecy, reason and passion. Unusually, the Romans kept his name almost unchanged. His attribute is the lyre, with which he charms the gods; at Delphi he slew the serpent Python and set up his oracle there. Later he was identified with the sun. Good to know: Apollo unites the arts and order: music and poetry, light, healing and the gift of prophecy. As god of healing he was also the father of Asclepius, the god of medicine. Apollo plays the lyre, said to have been given to him by the young Hermes on the day of his birth.
