Archery: basics
8 questions · Sports
Archery (basics): You shoot at the target (face). The innermost ring scores the 'ten'; values fall outward to 1. Olympic archery is shot from 70 metres. The recurve bow, with its curved-back tips, is the only Olympic bow type.
The bow with pulleys is the compound. The fully drawn string is full draw. Letting go of the string is the release. The projectile is the arrow.
Good to know: The rings score more toward the centre: the gold middle scores 10 points. In Olympic events a very central hit is an inner „10“: used to break ties. In Olympic recurve the target is 70 metres away. The name „recurve“ comes from the forward-curving limb tips that store extra energy. The compound bow uses pulleys to ease the hold; it is not (yet) Olympic. At full draw the archer holds the full draw weight: often over 20 kg. A calm, almost surprising release is key to accuracy. Competition arrows are usually carbon or aluminium. The target has ten rings; the closer to the centre, the more points: the gold counts most.
