Ares
12 questions Β· Mythology
Ares is the Greek god of war: wild, bloodthirsty and impetuous. He embodies the brutal, chaotic side of battle, the frenzy of slaughter, while the wise Athena stands for the strategic art of war.
Ares was little loved by gods and mortals; even his father Zeus called him the most hateful to him of all the gods. He is famous for his passionate affair with the love goddess Aphrodite.
Unlike in Greece, his Roman counterpart Mars enjoyed the highest regard: as father of Romulus he was there the ancestor of the Roman people. The red planet and the month of March are named after him.
As a brutal war god, Ares was disliked even by the other Olympians. From his union with Aphrodite came the goddess Harmonia.
Good to know: Ares stands for the unleashed violence of battle: in contrast to Athena's strategic art of war. He was accompanied by his sons Deimos (dread) and Phobos (fear): after whom the moons of Mars are named. Because of his cruelty, Ares was scarcely loved by gods or mortals. Ares and the love goddess Aphrodite were a passionate pair, although she was married to Hephaestus.
