Asgard

12 questions · Mythology

In Norse mythology, Asgard is the home of the Aesir, the chief race of gods around Odin and Thor. The fortified stronghold of the gods lies high in the order of the worlds and is linked to the human world of Midgard by the rainbow bridge Bifröst. In Asgard also stands Valhalla, the hall of fallen warriors. Through comics and films, Asgard has become world-famous today. In the sagas Asgard is ringed by a mighty wall, once built by a cunning giant. Its golden halls and towering ramparts have inspired countless modern stories and films. Asgard's wall has its own tale: a giant master-builder offered to fortify the stronghold within a deadline: demanding the sun, the moon and the goddess Freyja as payment. On Loki's advice the gods agreed, and when the giant was nearly finished thanks to his wonder-stallion Svadilfari, Loki turned himself into a mare and lured the animal away. From this episode came Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged steed. From his high seat Hlidskjalf, Odin surveys all the worlds; the goddess Idun keeps the Aesir young with her golden apples. Nor are the Aesir the only divine family: after a primeval war they made peace with the Vanir around Njord, Freyr and Freyja: sealed by an exchange of hostages. And even Asgard's splendour is finite: at Ragnarök, Surt's flames devour the citadel of the gods before a new world rises from the sea.
