In Greek myth, the Asphodel Meadows are the realm of ordinary souls in the underworld: that great majority of the dead who lived neither especially virtuous nor especially wicked lives. Here they lead a pale, indifferent shadow-existence between the paradisiacal Elysium and the punishing Tartarus. They are named after the pale asphodel flower that grows on these meadows. They show that the Greeks imagined the afterlife as bleak and shadowy for most people. The Asphodel Meadows are the afterlife of the many: neither reward nor punishment, but a grey twilight existence. Homer even has the shade of Achilles walk there, confessing to Odysseus that he would rather be the poorest day-labourer among the living than a king among the dead: probably the most famous line about this place. The souls there are shadows without strength or memory; only a drink of sacrificial blood briefly gives them recollection and voice in the epic. The meadows are named after the asphodel, a pale lily that really does spread across barren Mediterranean soils. Because its tubers were considered poor man's food, the plant fitted the realm of the nameless many twice over. In antiquity asphodel was therefore often planted on graves, as the flower of the dead.
