Atlantis is the most famous sunken island in world literature: the philosopher Plato described it as a mighty, highly advanced island realm whose people fell into arrogance and greed until it sank into the sea in a single catastrophe. Whether meant as a moral parable or as a memory of a real culture, Atlantis has fascinated for over two thousand years and has become the epitome of every lost world. People have searched for it from the deep sea to outer space: yet it has never been found. Plato tells the story in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias: beyond the “Pillars of Heracles” (the Strait of Gibraltar) lay an island empire larger than Libya and Asia together, rich in ore, splendid ring canals and a temple of Poseidon. Nine thousand years before his time, says Plato, the empire, grown arrogant, was swallowed by the sea “in a single day and night of misfortune”: the gods' punishment for its hubris. And the victor over Atlantis is, of all cities, a primeval Athens: the story is a parable about measure and pride, not a travel report. That stopped no one from searching: Atlantis was suspected near Santorini, whose eruption struck Minoan culture, in the Aegean, off Spain, or in the Atlantic itself, which lent the empire its name. From Jules Verne to Aquaman, the sunken city lives on in pop culture: perhaps the most successful invention in the history of philosophy.
