Augustine of Hippo

13 questions · Philosophy

Augustine, born in 354 in Thagaste in North Africa (in today's Algeria), started out as anything but a saint: the brilliantly gifted teacher of rhetoric enjoyed life in Carthage, lived for years with a mistress who bore him a son, and adhered to the sect of the Manichaeans. His famous prayer from those years: 'Grant me chastity: but not yet!' Meanwhile his Christian mother Monica prayed tirelessly for his conversion. In Milan, where he was appointed professor of rhetoric, came the turning point: under the influence of Bishop Ambrose and Neoplatonist philosophy, Augustine fell into a crisis: until, in a garden in 386, he heard a child's voice singing: 'Take up and read!' He opened the letters of Paul and was converted. He tells the story himself in the 'Confessions': the first great autobiography in world literature and at the same time a prayer of burning intensity. It also contains his famous reflections on time: 'What then is time? If no one asks me, I know; if I wish to explain it to one who asks, I know not.' Back in Africa, Augustine became bishop of Hippo Regius and the most influential thinker of Western Christianity: his teachings on grace, original sin and free will shape theology to this day. When the Visigoths sacked Rome in 410, he answered with his second masterwork, 'The City of God': world history as the struggle of two 'cities': the earthly city of self-love and the city of God. Did you know that Augustine died while the Vandals were besieging his episcopal city? In August 430: the master of ancient learning became the bridge between classical philosophy and the Middle Ages.
