Augustus

10 questions · History

Augustus, born in 63 BC, was the first Roman emperor and one of the most skilful power politicians in history. As the great-nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar he took up his inheritance. After Caesar's murder and a long civil war, Augustus prevailed as sole ruler: but cleverly kept up the appearance that the old Roman Republic lived on. In fact the age of emperors began with him. Under his long rule (27 BC to AD 14) the empire flourished and enjoyed a long era of peace, the "Pax Romana". Augustus reorganised administration, army and finances and shaped Rome for centuries. In his honour the month of August bears his name. Good to know: Augustus turned the Roman Republic into an empire and became its first emperor. As Julius Caesar's great-nephew and adopted son, he inherited his name and claim to power. After decades of civil war Augustus ended the Republic: yet outwardly preserved its forms.
