Ayrton Senna, born in São Paulo in 1960, is for many the most gifted Formula 1 driver in history and in his native Brazil remains a national hero to this day, almost a saintly figure. From a wealthy family, he devoted himself to motor racing with almost religious dedication. Senna became world champion three times. He was famous above all for his superhuman speed over a single lap: in qualifying he took a record number of pole positions. He was seen as a true master in the rain: in the most adverse conditions, when others fought merely to survive, Senna drove as if in a class of his own. At the Monaco Grand Prix he was the outstanding record winner. His bitter rivalry with the Frenchman Alain Prost defined a whole era of Formula 1. Senna was seen as a deep, reflective man who also spoke about God, fear and the meaning of his dangerous sport. In 1994 Ayrton Senna crashed fatally at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola: live on television, before millions of viewers. His death shook the world and led to far-reaching safety reforms in motorsport. Brazil declared three days of national mourning.
