Badminton: terms & technique

8 questions · Sports

Badminton (terms & technique): The flat, fast shot is the drive. Lifting the shuttle to the back is the lob. The attack at the net is the net kill (net shot). Good footwork returns the player to the central 'base' position after every shot. The central position is called the base. The strung part is the stringing (strings). For the backhand you use the backhand grip. A rally is called a rally. Good to know: Flat drives force fast reactions near the net. A good lob sails to just behind the back line. Net shots decide many rallies: millimetre work over the cord. Because the shuttle flies so fast, top players cover several kilometres per match. After every shot you return to the central base position. The thin strings are highly tensioned: giving precision and speed. For the backhand the thumb braces on the wide side of the grip. Top rallies often last only seconds but demand extreme explosiveness. The drive is the fastest exchange in the sport: flat and hard, often at the net in doubles.
