Baseball: basics
8 questions · Sports
Baseball (basics): A team has nine players in the field. The throw to the batter is the pitch. Three strikes and the batter is 'out'; four 'balls' (bad pitches) send him free to first base. Three strikes make an out.
The hit over the fence is a home run. A runner must reach first, second and third base and then home plate again. Behind home plate is the catcher. A game has nine innings.
Good to know: Batting (offence) and fielding (defence) alternate. A 'fastball' can travel over 150 km/h (95 mph). Three strikes make an out; four „balls“ (bad pitches) send the batter free to first base. Three strikes = out; four balls send the batter free to first base. With all bases loaded a home run scores four runs: a 'grand slam'. If runners are already on base, they all score on a home run: a „grand slam“ brings home four runs at once. The catcher signals the pitcher which pitch to throw next. If tied after nine innings, extra innings are played until there's a decision. Nine field players defend; on offence only one bats at a time: baseball is a duel between pitcher and batter.
