Baseball (terms & positions): The pitcher throws from the 'mound'; his duel with the batter often decides the game. The batter is the batter (hitter). Three strikes make a strikeout. Reaching first base is a 'single'; reaching second or third is a 'double' or 'triple'.
The fielding glove is the glove. The infield is called the diamond. Two outs at once is a double play. The official is the umpire.
Good to know: A star pitcher can carry a whole team: some earn tens of millions of dollars a season. A batting average of .300 is considered very good. A strikeout is traditionally recorded with a 'K'. A „single“ reaches one base, a „double“ two: the home run is the rare big hit over the fence. Fielding gloves are shaped differently by position. The infield with its four bases forms a diamond: hence the name. The classic double play runs from second to first base. The umpire behind the catcher rules on every pitch. The batter has only a split second to decide whether and how to swing: one of the hardest tasks in sport.
