Basic Maths Terms

12 questions · Maths & Logic

Before mathematics gets complicated comes the language: every calculation, every formula and every word problem is full of technical terms, and knowing them suddenly makes a lot of things easier. These basic terms appear not only in the classroom but also while shopping, cooking and glancing at a bank statement. This pack explains the most important of them: recognise the sum as the result of adding and the difference as the result of subtracting, the product from multiplying and the quotient from dividing, the numerator on top and the denominator below in a fraction, the exponent as the power and the root as its inverse, the prime number divisible only by one and itself, and the even number, plus the average as the mean value and percent as a share of a hundred: recognise them by their meaning and understand every problem a little more easily. For maths rarely fails on ability but often just on language: master the words, and the whole world of numbers loses much of its terror; the vocabulary makes numbers feel less like a foreign language and more like a familiar tool.
