Basketball (terms): Stuffing it into the hoop is a dunk (slam dunk). Taking the ball away is a steal. Stopping a shot is a block. Moving without dribbling is traveling. Dribbling again after stopping is a double dribble.
Losing the ball is a turnover. The quick counter is a fast break. A make on the buzzer is a buzzer beater. Illegal contact is a foul.
Good to know: A spectacular dunk scores the same as a simple layup: two points. Rebounds at both baskets often decide the game. An assist counts only if a basket follows directly. A steal often launches a fast break. A block is only legal while the ball is still rising; touching it on its way down towards the basket is goaltending. After the last dribble only two steps are allowed. Stopping and dribbling again loses the ball to the opponent. Turnovers are free possessions for the opponent. A fast break exploits the second before the defence is set. The shot must leave the hand before the buzzer. A triple-double means double figures in three categories, usually points, rebounds and assists: a mark of great versatility. After a set number of team fouls, free throws are awarded.
