Bavaria
9 questions · Geography
Bavaria is by far the largest German state by area and, with around 13.4 million inhabitants, also the most populous. It lies in the south-east of Germany, where the landscape stretches from the Danube in the north to the Alps in the south. The capital is Munich, seat of the state government and home of the Oktoberfest, which every year draws millions of guests to the Theresienwiese: the largest folk festival in the world.
The best-known landmark, however, stands on a rock above Hohenschwangau: Neuschwanstein Castle, the fairy-tale building of King Ludwig II, said to have inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. The coat of arms shows blue and white lozenges, long since a symbol of everything Bavarian: from football shirts to beer mugs. To the south and east the Free State borders Austria and the Czech Republic.
Did you know that Bavaria officially calls itself a “Freistaat”? The title dates from 1918 and was simply the German word for republic at the time; it has stuck ever since, as an expression of Bavarian self-confidence.
