Berlin
7 questions · Geography
Berlin is capital and federal state in one: a city-state in the north-east of Germany with around 3.8 million inhabitants, by far the largest city in the country. The river Spree flows through it, its banks lined with Museum Island, the government quarter and party districts.
The landmark above all others is the Brandenburg Gate: for decades it symbolised Germany's division, because the Wall ran directly in front of it, and on the night of 9 November 1989 it became the image of reunification. Berlin's coat of arms shows an upright walking bear: historians still argue about its origin; it probably goes back to the name of Albert the Bear.
Berlin is famous quite simply for being the capital of Germany, and beyond that for its museums, its clubs and an attitude to life that former mayor Klaus Wowereit once described as “poor but sexy”.
Did you know that Berlin is nine times the size of Paris? Between its districts lie forests, lakes and fields: around a third of the area is green space and water.
