All about Biathlon: Biathlon combines cross-country skiing with precision shooting: endurance meets a steady hand. Each shooting stage has five targets. Athletes shoot alternately prone (smaller target) and standing (larger target). For a miss you must ski a penalty loop.
They carry a small-bore rifle. Everyone starting together is the mass start. Four athletes in turn run in the relay. The dominant nation is Norway.
Good to know: This mix of all-out endurance and calm precision makes biathlon so gripping. Each miss brings a penalty: a penalty loop or added time. Prone targets are smaller: but standing is harder to hold steady after skiing. The penalty loop is usually 150 metres long. The rifle weighs at least 3.5 kg and is carried on the back. In the mass start the shooting is a thriller, with everyone side by side. In the relay you may use three spare rounds before having to ski a penalty loop. Germany and France are also among the world's best. Shooting is from 50 metres; a hit visibly flips the target from black to white.
