Billie Eilish
10 questions Β· Society & Everyday
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell is born in Los Angeles in 2001 into a family of artists. School happens at home, but music is everywhere: together with her older brother Finneas she records her songs in her bedroom. It is there, in that home bedroom, that she creates the song "Ocean Eyes" in 2015 and, aged 13, uploads it to the internet: where it goes viral overnight.
What follows is one of the most unusual rises in pop history. Billie's music is whispered, dark and intimate, far from glossy mainstream pop. In 2019 her debut album 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' appears, with the global hit "Bad Guy". At the 2020 Grammys she sweeps all four main categories: the youngest artist ever to do so.
Visually, too, Eilish breaks with expectations: at first she deliberately wears baggy, oversized clothes so as not to be reduced to her body: a much-noted statement against the pressure on young women in pop. She speaks openly about mental health, Tourette syndrome and her experience of fame.
Still only in her early twenties, Billie Eilish has already won two Oscars for film songs (including the title song of the James Bond film 'No Time to Die') and is one of the defining voices of her generation. She stands for a new kind of pop star: quiet, vulnerable and at the same time radically independent.
