Bob Dylan

13 questions · Music

Bob Dylan from the USA, born Robert Zimmerman, is regarded as the greatest songwriter of the 20th century. Rooted in folk, he accompanied himself on guitar and harmonica and, with ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ and ‘The Times They Are a-Changin’’, gave a whole protest generation its voice. In 1965 he broke with expectations: he ‘went electric’, picked up the electric guitar and was branded a traitor by part of the folk crowd. Yet with ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ and the epic ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ he made rock history; later ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ became a world hit. Dylan raised song lyrics to a literary level and in 2016 became the first musician ever to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Good to know: Awarded for ‘new poetic expressions’ in song. He took his time responding to the award at first. The song became a civil-rights anthem. ‘The answer is blowin’ in the wind.’ He played early in the cafés of Greenwich Village. Woody Guthrie was his great role model. Part of the folk audience felt betrayed.
