All about Boxing basics: A pro round usually lasts three minutes. On a knockout the referee counts to ten; if the boxer doesn't rise in time, the fight is over. The stoppage is a technical knockout (TKO). Boxing takes place in the ring. If a fight goes the full distance, the three judges decide the winner. With no clear winner the fight is a draw. Between rounds boxers sit in their corner. To surrender, the corner throws in the towel. Good to know: There is a one-minute rest between rounds. The term „K. o.“ comes from English „knockout“ and has long entered everyday speech. A TKO protects the losing boxer from further punishment. The 'ring' is really square: usually about six by six metres. Because three judges often score differently, close fights can be controversial: fans cry „robbery“. In a 'split draw' the three judges score differently. The team works in the corner: trainer and 'cutman' treat swelling and cuts. 'Throwing in the towel' has become an everyday phrase for giving up.
