Boxing: punches & terms
8 questions · Sports
Boxing (punches & terms): The jab is the fast, straight lead-hand punch: used to keep distance and set up combinations. The sideways punch is the hook. The punch from below is the uppercut. The hard strong-hand punch is the cross.
Ducking under the punch is a slip. Boxers counter from a high guard; if the guard drops, it gets dangerous. The punch right after a defence is a counter. Movement in the ring is footwork.
Good to know: The jab is the most-used punch: it keeps the opponent at range and sets up combinations. A liver hook can drop even strong boxers. The uppercut comes up 'through the guard' in close: very dangerous. The cross is the most powerful punch: from the strong hand over the lead. A good slip makes the punch miss and opens up a counter. A good guard alone isn't enough: purely defensive boxers lose points and lose on the cards. Counter-punchers deliberately wait for the attacker's mistake. Muhammad Ali: 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.' The hook comes sideways around the guard: landed cleanly it's one of the most effective knockout punches.
