Boxing: weight classes & titles
8 questions · Sports
Boxing (weight classes & titles): The heaviest class is heavyweight. The lightest classic class is flyweight. Because four bodies each award their own belt, a division often has several 'world champions'. Holding all four belts makes a champion undisputed.
The symbolic prize is the belt. 'The Greatest' was Muhammad Ali. In Kinshasa, Ali beat the favoured George Foreman with the clever 'rope-a-dope' tactic. Olympic boxing is amateur boxing.
Good to know: The heavyweight champion is traditionally seen as the 'biggest name' in boxing. In flyweight, speed and footwork matter more than raw power. Because four bodies award titles in parallel, a single weight often has several „world champions“ at once. Being 'undisputed' is rare: you must beat every governing body's champion. Each governing body has its own differently designed belt. Ali won Olympic gold in 1960 and later became a three-time world champion. At the „Rumble in the Jungle“ Ali beat the favourite Foreman with his „rope-a-dope“ tactic.
