Brandenburg
9 questions · Geography
Brandenburg surrounds the capital Berlin like a ring and lies in the north-east of Germany. Around 2.6 million people live here, spread across a wide landscape of pine forests, lakes and canals: no other German state has so much water in relation to its area. It is governed from Potsdam, right on Berlin's doorstep.
That is also where the state's most famous building stands: Sanssouci Palace, which Frederick the Great had built as a summer residence on a vineyard terrace. “Sanssouci” means “without worries”: the king wanted to escape court ceremony here, to make music and to philosophise. The river Havel flows through Brandenburg, a calm waterway rich in lakes, and the coat of arms bears a red eagle on a white field.
The state is famous for the Spreewald, where the Spree branches into hundreds of small channels and punts carry freight through the watery maze. To the east Brandenburg borders Poland.
Did you know that the Spreewald gherkins from this region are a legally protected speciality?
