Bremen
8 questions · Geography
Bremen is the smallest German state (and a curiosity too): it consists of two cities some 60 kilometres apart, Bremen itself and Bremerhaven at the mouth of the North Sea. Together they have around 680,000 inhabitants. The city-state lies in the north-west, on the river Weser, which links it to the sea and has made Bremen a trading city since the Middle Ages.
Its best-known landmark is the Bremen Town Musicians: donkey, dog, cat and cockerel, stacked on top of each other as a bronze figure beside the town hall. In the Brothers Grimm fairy tale the four animals never actually reach Bremen: they stop along the way. Bremen's coat of arms bears a silver key, the symbol of the city's patron saint Peter.
Around the market square stand the town hall and the Roland statue, both UNESCO World Heritage since 2004. Legend has it that grasping the donkey's front legs brings good luck.
Did you know that Bremen is called the “key to the world”, because of its harbour and the key in its coat of arms?
