The Buddha, whose given name was Siddhartha Gautama, probably lived in the 5th or 6th century BC in the border region of present-day Nepal and India. He is regarded as the founder of Buddhism, one of the great world religions. According to tradition he grew up as a sheltered prince in wealth. When he first saw old age, sickness and death, he left his life of luxury to search for the meaning of suffering. After years of asceticism and meditation he attained "enlightenment" under a fig tree, the Bodhi tree: the title "Buddha" means "the awakened one". His teaching shows a way to overcome suffering. At its heart are the "Four Noble Truths" and the "Eightfold Path" to a wholesome life.
