Capitals you should know
20 questions · General knowledge
Twenty capitals where hesitating gives you away. Not Palikir or Ngerulmud: the ones that turn up in the news every week. Paris, London, Rome and Madrid come easily to most people; it gets interesting just behind them. The capital of the United States is not New York but Washington, D.C., and that was no accident: in 1790 North and South could not agree on any existing city, so a new one was laid out on the Potomac. Brazil did something similar in 1960, building Brasília out in the empty highlands to relieve overcrowded Rio. Australia's capital is neither Sydney nor Melbourne but Canberra: placed exactly between the two rivals so that neither would win. Switzerland officially has no capital at all, only a federal city: Bern. And South Africa affords itself three seats of government, so depending on the question the answer may be Pretoria, Cape Town or Bloemfontein. These cards come from the capitals packs of the app and share their learning progress: if you already know them there, you do not have to practise them again here and if you learn them here, they count there too.
