Carl Lewis

10 questions · Sports

Carl Lewis, born in the USA in 1961, was the dominant track-and-field athlete of the 1980s and early 1990s and one of the greatest Olympians ever. Both his parents were sports coaches, and Carl early modelled himself on his great idol Jesse Owens, with astonishing success. Lewis won a total of nine gold medals across four consecutive Olympic Games. Like Owens before him, he excelled in both sprinting and the long jump. Especially impressive: in the long jump he remained unbeaten for over a decade and took Olympic gold in it four times in a row: a consistency almost unmatched in sport. At the 1984 Games in Los Angeles he won four gold medals, deliberately echoing Jesse Owens's legendary feat of 1936. His long, smooth running technique was seen as a model of efficiency. Lewis was not always the most popular star: some found him too self-assured. But no one doubted his sporting greatness. The International Olympic Committee later voted him Sportsman of the 20th Century. In the end it is less about memorising than about recognising.
