Cat Breeds

22 questions · Nature

House cats look a little different all over the world, and behind many breeds lies a story. The Siamese, from present-day Thailand, has dark 'points' on its ears, face, paws and tail because its fur darkens at the cooler parts of the body. Almost every Burmese alive today descends from a single cat called Wong Mau, brought to the USA in 1930, and the folded ears of the Scottish Fold go back to a mutation that appeared in a cat in Scotland in 1961. Legend says the Birman received its blue eyes and white paws as a blessing from a temple god in Burma. Some breeds are recognisable by their build. The Maine Coon is a gentle giant, the Norwegian Forest Cat braves the Scandinavian climate in a water-repellent coat, and the Ragdoll goes completely limp when picked up, just like a rag doll. The Persian has long fur and a flat face, the British Shorthair a round, plush look, while the Chartreux and the Russian Blue both wear blue-grey: the first with copper eyes, the second with green. Others stand out because of their coat, or the lack of one. The Sphynx is almost hairless, while the Devon Rex and the Cornish Rex wear soft waves. The Abyssinian and its long-haired cousin the Somali, the 'fox cat', have finely ticked fur. The Bombay is bred to look like a miniature panther, the Turkish Angora is often pure white, and the Oriental Shorthair looks like a Siamese in a single colour. Things get wilder with the Bengal and the Savannah, both bred from crosses with wild cats, and the Manx from the Isle of Man is known for having little or no tail.
