The centaur is a hybrid creature from Greek mythology: half human, half horse. Above the body of a horse rises the upper body of a man. Most centaurs were seen as wild, coarse and given to wine: at a famous wedding they drunkenly started a bloody battle with the Lapiths. They embody the untamed, animal side of humankind. A great exception is the wise centaur Chiron, a learned healer and teacher of many heroes such as Achilles and Heracles. So the centaur stands at once for raw impulse and for wisdom. Their forefather was, of all figures, the sinner Ixion, who embraced a cloud in Hera's shape. At the Lapith wedding feast, unwatered wine drove the herd wild: the battle became, on the Parthenon metopes, a symbol of civilisation against savagery. The exception remained Chiron: teacher of Achilles and Asclepius, who in the end gave up his immortality. From there a straight line leads to the star-reading centaurs in Hogwarts' Forbidden Forest. Good to know: The centaur has the body of a horse from which rises the upper body of a human.
