Ceres is the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain and the harvest. She taught humankind to grow grain and watched over Rome's supply of bread: a vital task for a city of a million people.
Ceres was held in especially high regard by the common people, the plebs; her temple was a centre of plebeian self-government. Her festival, the Cerialia in April, was celebrated with games.
Ceres corresponds to the Greek Demeter. The word „cereal“ derives from her name, and the largest dwarf planet of the asteroid belt bears her name.
The abduction of her daughter Proserpina by Pluto explains, in Ceres, the turning of the seasons.
