Charles V, born in Ghent in 1500, ruled an empire „on which the sun never set“: from Spain through Germany and Italy to the Americas. As Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain at once, he was the most powerful man in Europe. He fought Francis I of France, the Ottomans before Vienna, and was Martin Luther’s great adversary at the Diet of Worms. Exhausted, he abdicated in 1556 and withdrew to a monastery. Good to know: It stretched from Europe to the newly conquered New World. Later the phrase was applied to the British Empire too. At the Diet of Worms in 1521 Luther refused to recant before him. Charles outlawed him: but the Reformation could not be stopped. From Spain flowed the riches of the American colonies. His son Philip II later inherited the Spanish empire. Through clever marriage policy the Habsburgs amassed crowns. „Let others wage war; you, happy Austria, marry“ was their motto. The first siege of Vienna failed against the defenders. The struggle with the Ottomans tied down Charles’s forces in the east.
