Charlie Chaplin

10 questions · Film & Cinema

Charlie Chaplin, born into poverty in London in 1889, was the most famous star of the silent-film era and a pioneer of cinema: at once director, lead actor, writer and composer of his films. World-famous became his figure of the "Tramp": a vagabond with a bowler hat, bamboo cane, far too big shoes and a big heart. With films such as "The Gold Rush", "City Lights" and "Modern Times" Chaplin combined slapstick with emotion and quiet social criticism. In 1940 he ventured a bold satire of Adolf Hitler in "The Great Dictator". Chaplin was among the co-founders of the film studio United Artists and became one of the best-known people in the world. He died in 1977. Good to know: Chaplin grew up in bitter poverty in London; his mother was at times committed to a workhouse. Chaplin was the greatest star of the silent era and long refused to switch to sound: his art lived on mime. His „Tramp“ with bowler hat, cane and waddling walk became the most recognisable film character in the world. In „The Great Dictator“ Chaplin mocked Hitler in 1940; a bold film while the USA was not yet at war. The two were, incidentally, born just four days apart.
