Chess: basics
10 questions · Sports
Chess (basics): The board is 8×8 = 64 squares, alternating light and dark. 16 pieces each: king, queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. An attack on the king is called check. 'Checkmate' (from Persian 'shah mat': the king is defeated) ends the game at once. The strongest piece is the queen.
The knight moves in an L-shape. In castling the king moves two squares toward the rook, which jumps over it: the only move using two of your own pieces. The pawn is promoted (promotion). This draw is called stalemate.
Good to know: On 8×8 squares billions of positions arise after just a few moves; the number of possible games (the Shannon number, about 10 to the 120th) exceeds the number of atoms in the visible universe. Eight pawns and eight pieces per side: each moves by its own rule, and only the knight may jump over others. When the king is in check, the player must deal with the threat at once. The word comes from the Persian „shah mat“: „the king is defeated“. The queen combines the moves of the rook and the bishop. The knight is the only piece that can jump over others.
