Chess: terms & tactics

8 questions · Sports

Chess (terms & tactics): In the opening you develop pieces and safeguard the king; well-known systems include the Sicilian and the Ruy Lopez. The final phase is the endgame. A double attack is a fork. This is called a pin. In a 'gambit' you sacrifice a pawn early for quick development and attack. A vertical column is called a file. A well-known reply is the Sicilian. Such an attack is a mating attack. Good to know: Some openings are analysed dozens of moves deep: pros memorise entire trees of „theory“. In the endgame the king suddenly becomes an active attacking piece. The knight especially likes to 'fork', for example king and queen. An 'absolute' pin against the king cannot legally be broken. A gambit deliberately sacrifices material for tempo and attack; the King's Gambit is among the oldest. Horizontal rows (1 to 8) are 'ranks', slanting lines are 'diagonals'. At the top level the Sicilian Defence is the most common reply to 1.e4. Famous mating attacks sacrifice material for speed and initiative.
