Chimera
12 questions · Mythology
The Chimera is a fire-breathing monster of Greek mythology, made up of three animals: a lion in front, a goat in the middle, a serpent at the rear. It ravaged the land of Lycia with its fiery breath.
The hero Bellerophon defeated the Chimera from the air, riding the winged horse Pegasus. He thrust a lump of lead into its fire-breathing maw, which melted and killed it from within.
Because of its unnaturally combined body, the word „chimera“ still stands for an illusion, an impossible combination or (in biology) an organism made of different genetic material.
Homer described the monster of Lycia already in the Iliad; its parents were the primal monsters Typhon and Echidna. On the Lycian coast, eternal gas flames still burn from the rock, to antiquity, the fiery breath of the beast that Bellerophon, in one version, defeated with lead melting on his lance tip. Science inherited the name twice over: as an organism of mixed cells and as the deep-sea ratfish.
Good to know: The Chimera is a lion in front, a goat in the middle and a serpent at the rear and breathes fire.
