Christopher Columbus

10 questions · History

Christopher Columbus, born around 1451 in Genoa, was a seafarer whose voyages changed world history. Convinced he could reach Asia by a western route across the Atlantic, he won the Spanish crown as his backer. In 1492 he set sail and, after weeks at sea, landed on an island in the Caribbean: firmly believing he had reached India. In fact he had stumbled upon a double continent unknown to Europeans. In all he made four voyages and, until his death, assumed he had been to Asia. His voyages ushered in the European conquest and colonisation of the Americas, with devastating consequences for the Indigenous population. Columbus died in 1506. Good to know: Columbus probably came from Genoa and courted backers for years in vain until Spain funded his voyage. In 1492 Columbus set sail with three ships: the Santa María, Pinta and Niña. Until his death Columbus was sure he had found the sea route to India: hence the name „Indians“. Columbus probably never set foot on the North American mainland: he landed on Caribbean islands.
