Musicals combine acting, singing and dancing into big nights out, and their tunes are often familiar even to people who have never been to the theatre. The genre’s homes are Broadway in New York and London’s West End. That is where classics such as “West Side Story” were born, in which Leonard Bernstein moved Romeo and Juliet to the streets of New York, and “My Fair Lady”, in which Professor Higgins teaches a flower girl to speak like a lady. No composer has shaped the modern musical more than Andrew Lloyd Webber. He had his cast prowl the stage as felines in “Cats”, sent locomotives racing on roller skates in “Starlight Express”, told the life of Eva Perón in “Evita” and the last days of Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar”. His “Phantom of the Opera” ran on Broadway for 35 years. From France came “Les Misérables”, after Victor Hugo, and from Sweden the songs for “Mamma Mia!”. Other shows mirror their era: “Hair” the hippies’ protest against the Vietnam War, “Cabaret” Berlin on the eve of the Nazi era, “Chicago” the press’s hunger for sensation in the Twenties and “Grease” teenage life in the Fifties. Disney brought “The Lion King” to the stage, “Wicked” tells the backstory of the witches of Oz, and “Hamilton” brought hip-hop to Broadway. Can you recognise the great musicals by their plots?
