Clemens August Graf von Galen, born in 1878 at Dinklage Castle in the Oldenburg Münsterland, was Bishop of Münster and in 1941 three sermons made him the best-known church critic of the Nazi state. The tall aristocrat was conservative, nationalist and no democrat. But he stubbornly defended the rights of the church and had contributed to the encyclical “Mit brennender Sorge”, with which Pope Pius XI indicted the Nazi state in 1937. In summer 1941 the Gestapo seized monasteries in Münster and expelled the religious orders. Galen answered from the pulpit. In his third sermon on 3 August 1941 he publicly denounced the secret murder of the sick and people with disabilities, the T4 programme, and filed a criminal complaint for murder. Copies spread throughout the Reich, and the Royal Air Force dropped the text as leaflets. A few weeks later Hitler halted the centrally organised gassing, although the killing continued in a decentralised way. People now called Galen the “Lion of Münster”. The regime did not dare arrest him; Goebbels wanted to settle the score after the war. Galen remained publicly silent about the crimes against the Jews. In February 1946 Pope Pius XII made him a cardinal; a few days after returning from Rome he died in Münster. He was beatified in 2005.
