Confucius

10 questions · Religion & Belief

Confucius, born around 551 BC in China, was a philosopher and teacher whose thought shaped Chinese culture for over two millennia: more deeply than that of almost anyone else. At the centre of his teaching are not gods but the right conduct of people in the community. Confucius stressed values such as humaneness, sincerity, respect for parents and elders, and order and harmony in family and society. A good ruler, he believed, leads by example and virtue, not by mere force. His pupils collected his sayings in the work of the "Analects". Confucianism became the foundation of education and administration in imperial China. Good to know: Confucius lived around 2,500 years ago in China: at a time of political fragmentation and disorder. His teaching centres on right conduct, duty and the proper ordering of society. Respect for elders, learning and social harmony are at the heart of his thought. His sayings were gathered only after his death by disciples in the „Analects“ (Lunyu). Confucianism shaped China's thought, administration and family life for over 2,000 years.
