COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

17 questions ยท History

The COVID-19 pandemic was the first global epidemic of the internet age and, from 2020 on, changed the lives of billions of people. The illness is caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, first noticed in late 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The pathogen spread rapidly around the world through the air; on 11 March 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared a pandemic. To slow the spread, governments imposed unprecedented measures: lockdowns, closed schools and shops, mask mandates, distancing rules and working from home. In Germany the Robert Koch Institute coordinated the response. The disease ranges from symptomless through flu-like courses to severe pneumonia; typical are fever, cough and a temporary loss of taste and smell. The elderly and those with prior illness were especially at risk. In record time researchers developed vaccines, including the first ever approved mRNA vaccines from BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna. The virus kept changing; variants such as Delta and Omicron triggered new waves. The pandemic claimed millions of lives worldwide, overwhelmed health systems and left deep marks on the economy, education and society.
