Cricket: basics

8 questions · Sports

Cricket (basics): A cricket team has eleven players. The bowler delivers with a straight arm, trying to hit the 'wicket' or force a mistake. The batter is the batsman. The batsman defends the wicket. Along the ground over the boundary is 4 runs; over it without bouncing is 6 (a 'sixer'). A ball straight over the boundary scores six runs. A dismissed batsman is 'out'. Bowler and batsman contest each other on the roughly 20-metre 'pitch'. Good to know: As in football, eleven players per team are on the field. A bowler delivers with a straight arm over the head; a bent-arm delivery is illegal „throwing“. Two batsmen are always on the field at once. On the three stumps rest two small crosspieces, the 'bails'. If the ball clears the boundary on the full it's worth six runs: cricket's big hit. A 'sixer' is cricket's equivalent of a home run. If a fielder catches the ball straight from the air, the batsman is 'caught out'. The pitch changes over the days: seasoned captains plan their tactics around it.
