Cycling: grand tours & classics
8 questions · Sports
Cycling (grand tours & classics): The Tour de France loops around France over three weeks and traditionally ends in Paris on the Champs-Élysées. They are the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España. The Italian tour is the Giro d'Italia. The Spanish tour is the Vuelta a España.
The cobbled classic is Paris-Roubaix. The road world champion wears the rainbow jersey until the next World Championship. The climb with 21 bends is Alpe d'Huez. On the road the Olympics has the road race.
Good to know: The Tour de France is regarded, after the Olympics and football World Cup, as the third-biggest sporting event in the world. Winning all three Grand Tours (Tour, Giro, Vuelta) in one year has never been done. Its overall leader wears the pink jersey ('Maglia Rosa'). The Vuelta is the youngest of the three Grand Tours. Because of the rough cobbles it's called the 'Hell of the North'. The rainbow jersey is worn by the reigning road world champion for a year: one of cycling's greatest honours.
