Cyrus the Great

9 questions · History

Cyrus the Great, who lived in the 6th century BC, created the first true world empire in history: the Persian Empire of the Achaemenids. Starting from the small people of the Persians, he conquered realm after realm, until in 539 BC he even took mighty Babylon. Unlike many conquerors he ruled with astonishing tolerance: he respected foreign religions and allowed the Jews carried off into exile to return to Jerusalem. The famous Cyrus Cylinder bears witness to this. Good to know: It was the largest empire the world had yet seen. Under his successors it stretched from Egypt to India. He is said to have entered the wealthy metropolis almost without a fight. With this the entire Neo-Babylonian Empire fell to Persia. He even permitted the rebuilding of the Temple. In the Bible Cyrus is expressly praised for this. The clay artefact proclaims order and respect for foreign customs. Some call it the „first charter of human rights“: though this is disputed. He let the religions and customs of the conquered remain.
