Darts: terms & technique

Darts (terms & technique): A 'finish' (checkout) is the score you can close on exactly 0 (on a double) with up to three darts. 170 is the 'big fish'. The throw line is called the oche. A match is made of 'legs' and often 'sets': whoever wins enough first wins the match.
A group of legs is a set. A 180 is the maximum. Too many points is a bust. The board has 20 numbered fields.
Good to know: A finish over 100 shows real class: pros routinely check out even three-figure remainders. 170 (treble 20, treble 20, bull) is the highest possible checkout. 'Oche' is said to derive from an old brewery crate used as a throwing mark. Whoever wins enough legs (or sets) first takes the match: the number varies by tournament. Big tournaments are played in sets, smaller ones only in legs. A 180 is the highest score: celebrated with 'One hundred and eighty!'. A 'bust' voids the whole turn: the old remainder stays. The 20 is at the top; high and low numbers deliberately alternate. The oche sits exactly 2.37 m from the board; no toe may cross it on the throw.
