David Bowie from England was pop’s great shape-shifter: a chameleon who reinvented himself every few years, boldly playing with androgyny and gender. The musician became personas: the alien rock star ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and the cool, elegant ‘Thin White Duke’. As early as 1969 ‘Space Oddity’ and its astronaut Major Tom caught the mood of the Moon-landing era; the album ‘Hunky Dory’ revealed him as a brilliant songwriter. In the late 1970s he moved to Berlin and recorded his classic ‘Heroes’ there, an anthem of the divided city. In 1983 the danceable ‘Let’s Dance’ conquered the charts. Bowie kept surprising, with the Christmas duet ‘Little Drummer Boy’ alongside Bing Crosby, or as the Goblin King in the film ‘Labyrinth’. Two days before his death in 2016 came his enigmatic farewell ‘Blackstar’. Good to know: Ziggy was Bowie’s first great alter ego. He ‘killed off’ Ziggy on stage in 1973. It was released to coincide with the 1969 Moon landing. Major Tom returns in ‘Ashes to Ashes’. It was made in Berlin, where Bowie lived in the late 1970s.
