Diana
12 questions · Mythology
Diana is the Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon and the wilderness, also protector of women, of slaves and of women in childbirth. A virgin huntress, she roams the forests with bow and arrow.
Her most famous sanctuary lay at Lake Nemi in the Alban Hills, where her priest (a runaway slave) kept his post only until a stronger man replaced him in single combat. The cult drew pilgrims well into imperial times.
Diana corresponds to the Greek Artemis and is often shown with a crescent moon in her hair.
As goddess of the hunt, Diana was at the same time a moon goddess of the night sky.
Good to know: Diana rules the hunt and the forest and, as moon goddess, watches over women and childbirth. Her sanctuary at Lake Nemi was an important place of pilgrimage well into antiquity. Diana is the Roman counterpart of the Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis. As a moon goddess Diana is often shown with a crescent moon in her hair. Diana was seen as protector of women and (unusually) of runaway slaves too.
