Diego Armando Maradona, born in 1960 in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, was a footballing genius with his left foot and one of the most contradictory figures in sport. Short, stocky and incredibly sure on the ball, he could decide a match single-handedly. His greatest triumph was the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, which he won almost alone as captain of the Argentine team. In the quarter-final against England his two most famous goals came within minutes: first the "Hand of God", when he illegally put the ball in the net with his hand, then the "Goal of the Century", when he dribbled past half the English side. At club level he became a demigod at SSC Napoli: with the small southern Italian club he won the Italian championship twice and is revered there like a saint to this day. He wore the legendary number 10 shirt. Maradona's life was also overshadowed by drugs, scandals and health crises: yet none of it dented the devotion to him. When he died in 2020, all of Argentina mourned; the country declared three days of national mourning.
