Dionysus

12 questions · Mythology

Dionysus is the Greek god of wine, ecstasy, fertility and theatre. With a wild retinue of maenads and satyrs he roams the world, granting intoxication and joy in life: but also madness and destruction. He was the only great god with a mortal mother, the princess Semele. As the „twice-born,“ he was carried after her death in the thigh of Zeus. As a god who dies and returns, he embodies the eternal cycle of nature. From the festivals in his honour the ancient theatre, with tragedy and comedy, developed. In Roman mythology he corresponds to Bacchus, whose riotous „Bacchanalia“ were for a time banned in Rome. It was Dionysos who granted King Midas the fateful wish that everything he touched turned to gold: even his food. Good to know: Dionysus gives wine and liberating intoxication and the dissolving of all boundaries in celebration. Dionysus was the only Olympian with a mortal mother, the princess Semele. When his mother Semele burned up, Zeus sewed the unborn child into his thigh and carried it to term.
